Unguja, also known as Zanzibar Island, is the main island in the Tanzanian archipelago of Zanzibar. it is home for most of Zanzibar’s population. Stone Town is the main port and commercial center of the whole Zanzibar. Being an island there is a wide variety of different beach destinations to suit each one’s tastes and preferences. The main choice, however, is between Zanzibar City area (including Stone Town), northern beaches (Nungwi and Kendwa), North East (Matemwe, Kiwengwa, Pwani Mchangani) and East Coast (Michamvi, Bwejuu, Paje and Jambiani).

Zanzibar Island’s festival calendar
Unguja is a bristling town with a rich and colorful history and culture. Without a doubt, Zanzibar Island is the melting pot of cultures in the East African coast. Every February, Sauti za Busara, an international music festival brings best artists from Zanzibar and Tanzania, and many interesting stars from Africa and the whole world to Ungunja. Come July than movies from all over the world, workshops with true professionals and great artists are screened in the evenings during Zanzibar International Film Festivals (ZIFF). This festival takes a full week.
Before the year ends another major festival goes down in Zanzibar Island. At the end of August / beginning of September Jahazi literary and Jazz festival is held and days are filled with authors, poems, readings, discussions and workshops with evenings dedicated for enjoying jazz.

Getting to Unguja
Many international flight companies fly to Zanzibar Airport located close to Stone Town. There are also several local flights from Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, Nairobi and Mombasa. There’s also the option of first touching base at Tanzania’s Julius Nyerere International Airport and then proceeding to Unguja. Travelers coming from mainland Tanzania prefer to take a passenger ferry – it takes less than 2 hours.
